The Kentucky Science and Engineering Foundation: KSEF

Commercialization, and SBIR/STTR in Kentucky

The Kentucky Science and Engineering Foundation (KSEF) invests in research and development activity to promote innovation, new product development and commercialization, to advance new ideas and technologies that could add value to scientific and economic growth in Kentucky. To this end KSEF manages four funding programs:

  Research and Development Excellence Program (RDE) -- targets excellence in science and engineering in Kentucky, through innovation and technology development in existing and emerging areas of research, with a peer-reviewed competitive selection process. Application and reporting portal for RDE: 

  Kentucky Commercialization Fund (COMM) -- supports efforts made by faculty in the Commonwealth of Kentucky to commercialize a technology, product, or process that they have developed but not yet licensed. Application and reporting portal for COMM:

  Kentucky SBIR/STTR Phase Zero and Phase Double Zero (PZ/DZ) -- funds the development and preparation of Federal Phase I and Phase II proposals for Kentucky-based Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer Research (STTR).   Kentucky SBIR/STTR Matching Funds Program -- provides grants for additional work tasks and activities supporting and complementary to Federal Phase I or Federal Phase II Awards. Application and reporting portal for Matching Funds:

These programs support ideas and technologies in five priority research areas: Biosciences, Environmental and Energy Technologies, Human Health and Development, Information Technology and Communications, and Materials Science and Advanced Manufacturing.

Created under the Kentucky Innovation Act of 2000, KSEF is an initiative of the Kentucky Science and Technology Corporation (KSTC) and is managed in partnership with the Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education (CPE). KSTC is a private nonprofit enterprise founded in 1987 to enhance capacity of people, firms and organizations, to use science and technology to effectively compete in the global market place.
