R&D for small business? Learn important details on how to use SBIR/STTR Programs to develop your technology and become involved in this $2.5 Billion federal program.

This workshop, organized by the Kentucky Science and Engineering Foundation, will be led by SBIR advisor and writing coach Jim Greenwood (speaker bio). Jim has over 30 years of SBIR experience, and is known for providing detailed, high-quality information to help you succeed in SBIR. In addition, Jim will offer workshop attendees a free review of your proposal by GCGI, valued at $1,000.register here

About the Workshop

  • SBIR Phase II basics, differences between the Phase II agencies, Phase II proposal preparation process, technology commercialization process and Phase II (including commercialization potential of your project, commercialization topics that must be addressed in the Phase II proposals), Phase II cost proposals and audits.
  • For companies to be able to complete, it is important that a significant number researchers in our region become involved in SBIR/STTR related activities.
  • This event will be tailored to those who are currently involved as well as those new to the programs -- to learn how to become involved either as consultants, collaborators, reviewers, or future applicants to the federal programs.

Pre-Event Homework: One-Page Concept Paper

This event will include the use of "live" examples and coaching of companies. To help Jim Greenwood better prepare, submit a one-page brief of your company/project to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

  1. Include your company name on line one, and your name and email address on line two.
  2. Prepare this concept paper as a "Word" document, with one-inch margins, Arial 11 font, and 400 total words.

Use the following titles on your document and answer these questions:

  1. What is the mission and what are the goals of your company? (two sentences)
  2. How does your SBIR project fit the mission and goals of your company? (two sentences)
  3. How have you concluded that your Phase I project was feasible? (two to three sentences)
  4. Describe your commercialization vision for Phase III: who are your customers and your competitors, and how will you make money?
  5. What is the expected goal and how will you know you have met your research objectives - that means, how do you define success?
